frontAmericans waste an astounding amount of food - an estimated 27 percent of the food available for consumption. The numbers seem all the more staggering now, given the current cost of groceries. Excerpted from the New York Times: May 18, 2008

Just how much money people save will vary, but the numbers might amaze you...

Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditures
Year 2005 2006 2007
Average per family 2.5 2.5 2.5
Food at home 3,297 3,417 3,465

In other words, in 2007, an average family of four spent $5544.00 on food at home and threw away 27%, or just under $1500.00 in food. For only $95.40 ($.26 cents per day) a family of four can easily save $500.00/year or more.
